KEY ELEMENTS TO CREATING A TAILORED BATHROOM

Fashion reflects the culture we experience, the places we travel, the things we eat, and yes, the way we design our spaces. The bathroom is a personal space, filled with individual choices. You wouldn’t normally think “fashion” when you picture a bathroom. However, designing a bathroom is just like putting together a tailored suit—you establish harmony by perfectly mixing style and personality. Whether its a spacious principle bathroom or a compact powder room, the space should be looked upon the same way you do when picking your clothing: constantly mindful of maintaining that tailored look by carefully layering those details and textures.

For a tailored bathroom design, keep in mind these 5 key elements: layer cool and nostalgic pieces; create a harmonious and tranquil feel; always work with classic whites; keep form and function in mind; and consider adding stylized touches.

COOL + NOSTALGIC

When we picture a tailored suit, cool and nostalgic shades hold their spot in the limelight. Depending on the shade, we can designate a space as more casual or more sophisticated. Brizo’s senior industrial designer explains that “the bath should be the destination where one finds balance.” Purple is one of those harmonious colours, and the choice we used throughout our bathroom design for Brizo’s Kintsu Bath Collection. Throughout the space you will see layered tones and tints of purple in the vanity, wall tile, and countertop material. The tile featured in the shower and water closet mimics a unique and exotic natural stone with veins of cool purple.

Pro tip: Mixing subtle tones and tints of colour will make a space feel cohesive and ensure it will last the test of time.

Bold colours can work against you by adding a date stamp that can date a space over time. The darkest hue, black, has always been a feature in bathroom trends, but more as stand-out fixtures like matte-black bathtubs. However, black can be used to add drama; black wall coverings, wrapping the finishes on the ceiling, and dark flooring offers a striking contrast. We utilized the shade with Brizo’s Widespread Lavatory Faucet with Arc Spout in the Brilliance Black Onyx finish, to bring both depth and nuance for a sense of beautiful complexity. We anticipate black will put a large stamp on new, moody design trends coming our way.

TRANQUIL DETAILS

Creating a sense of calm and relaxation is crucial in a bathroom. Many design styles epitomize this vibe: Japanese design often showcases a hybrid between practicality and style; soft contours in Scandinavian design reflect an elegant minimalism.

Combining the two styles in order to exemplify sophistication, the Kintsu Widespread Lavatory Faucet with Arc Spout and Widespread Lavatory Knob Handle Kit with Custom Inlay from the Brizo Kintsu Bath Collection features clean lines and a tailored appearance. The Kintsu Bathroom Collection embodies the tranquil contours of Scandi design to reflect that effortless minimalism. The shape of the faucet balances simplicity with intricacy, consistency with variety, and opposition with equality. Drawn from “Kintsugi,” a Japanese method of joining pieces of cracked pottery with gold, the name “kintsu” represents the way in which Japandi style merges two design philosophies for a stunning aesthetic.

THE CLASSIC WHITE

No tailored suit is fit without a clean-pressed white shirt. Any interior space should be looked at no differently. White is a simple and classic touch to any space that can add contrast or brighten up a space. It also grants a clean and crisp feel when layering natural textures and shapes that complement the space. Combining white with organic shapes we find in nature is a great way to create a relaxing environment. To find what natural elements you wish to incorporate in your bathroom design, pinpoint which environments from travel or special moments call to you. When put against white, natural elements connect the textures we find in those unique places and bring you back to those special moments.

PRO TIP: When selecting materials and finishes, note how the textures will play off other materials such as the polished mirror finish, the glass around your shower, the porcelain of your toilet and the under-mount sink.

Playing with more matte, toned, and three-dimensional textures will layer a good contrast between polished items. Layering man-made materials such as large-format porcelain tile flooring ensures an easy-to-clean and maintain space. Combining white with contrasting elements, matte finishes with polished ones, or natural features with manufactured ones creates contrast while still maintaining a sense of harmony. The popularity of these principles will increase over the years as they help create a sophisticated yet curated space.

FORM + FUNCTION

As the wish list for bathrooms keeps growing, designers are tasked with creating a compact space that still does it all. When creating your dream bathroom space or updating your current bathroom, take some time and think over the plan and overall layout of the space. If you are short on space, there are ways to maximize without sacrificing style.

PRO TIP: consider installing the tub asymmetrically or on an angle to take up less floor space.

When it comes to form, think of how simplicity can highlight instead of detract from the bathroom. The Kintsu Widespread Lavatory Faucet with Arc Spout by Brizo epitomizes sophistication in its unique architecture featuring simple and elegant lines. Delicate harmonies come to life in the Kintsu Bath Collection by Brizo. This provides more room to play with other design elements and decor.

PRO TIP: Wrapping materials, such as tile, from wall to wall or floor to ceiling will make any space feel larger.

VICTORIAN TOUCHES

When it comes to tailoring a design and tailoring a suit, a stand-out finishing touch completes the vision. Think of the accessories: In a suit, a family heirloom set of cuff-links, a hand-tied bowtie, or hand-formed classic leather shoes with matching belt pull the entire vision together. The choice to include Victorian elements in a bathroom design helps accessorize the space with a sense of romance. When layering Victorian elements in bathroom spaces, we tend to mix-and-match metals, decorative hardware, and lighting. When accessorizing, we need to find a common thread that pulls everything together; this could be a cool or warm colour palette, or a certain shape or form. Adding unique elements is one way to create a tailored and unique space.

A fun detail with the Kintsu Widespread Lavatory Faucet with Arc Spout is the reverence demonstrated from natural materials, such as Teak. The endless options within the 5 unique finishes embraces the importance of individual expression. We are seeing trends that are only going to bloom over the next few years that feature metal tiles, hand hammered metals, and leather accessories. These design features can be exemplified by including romantic, Victorian touches in your bathroom design.

For those who embrace fashion as a lifestyle, every choice they make is an opportunity to make a statement—to put their taste and perspective on display, elevate their surroundings, and inspire those around them. These people aren’t just wearing fashion; they’re living it.
