THE PURGE:

A little tough love never hurt anyone.

It’s time to let go of that year old button up with the tags still on, the statement blouse you haven't worn in over a year, and those beloved jeans that for the past two years have been pinching a little too tight around the waist. The disrespect.

The golden rule here is one we’ve all heard of. If you haven’t worn it in over a year—toss it! Make sure to donate the clothes (in good condition and with no holes) to a charity or your local thrift store. Two or three sentimental pieces are fine, but think about how often you’ll really look at and hold that garment just to reminisce. Trust that those memories are in your heart.

This is such a hard step; first you have to organize the boxes, then find the time to drop the full boxes and bags off! Take it from organizational expert Helen Youn - Certified Konmari Consultant and her philosophy of “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” When it’s done, it will bring the best feeling in the world!

A SEASONAL CLOSET:

This is a very effective way to create more storage space in your closet and in turn better organize it. Surely you’ve noticed a change in the weather now that it’s March, so bring out your spring and summer wardrobe and store you fall and winter clothes. This includes shoes. Make room for your boots and sneakers by storing your sandals and canvas shoes in those shoeboxes. Only keep the shoeboxes you like the look of, and simply alternate what shoes you keep in them depending on the season.

Make use of the wasted space under your bed, and store your off-season clothes in shallow storage boxes underneath. Once those clothes are out of the way, you’ll have new found space in your closet for the pieces you will need currently.

You could opt for having all of your clothes out and on display all year-round… but what’s the point if it’s so cluttered that you can’t properly visualize what you have available to wear? Especially in our north western climate where we have such distinct seasons. What you see is what you’ll use.

ADD A ROD:

Bring out your inner handyman. We all know that those tiny Vancouver apartments or those small heritage home closets have limited closet space. Another easy solution for  lack of storage space is to add a second rod in your closet. Hang up your shirts on the top rod and pants folded over the hanger on the bottom rod. A good height for the bottom rod is (give or take) 3’-6” (42”) above the finished floor. If you don’t have a separate coat closet, see if you can leave some free space below a portion of the top rod for some long dresses or coats.

These are some easy steps you can take to find more storage space in your current closet. Let us know how they work for you!
