RENOVATION | FAMILY HOME | COQUITLAM

This rustic farmhouse-style home harmonises modern flair with classic charm. Industrial touches shine through in design choices such as the metal sheet backsplash behind the stove and the steel kitchen appliances. Not only does this provide easy cleaning, but the sleek texture plays off the natural tones of the wood cabinets and the gorgeous evergreen trees outside. By mixing woods like the walnut floor, the dark cabinets, the light wood furniture, and the grainy wood beam above, it pulls more warmth into the space and contrasts against those rustic industrial elements, such as the pendant lights and the Kohler faucet. Edge pulls maintain a sleep design and allow the natural wood pattern to take centre stage.

The space works perfectly for any occasion; from summer BBQs to intimate dinner parties, the space provides easy flow for all social celebrations. The home started out underutilised storage with a dysfunctional kitchen that broke up the living and dining room. The footprint was Manoeuvred to maximise space and function; one of the ways we achieved this was by reconfiguring the kitchen, opening up the main floor and improving the eyeline—no matter where you stand. The high vaulted ceilings and large windows pull light and bring architectural character into the space. To keep it bright and airy, we adhered to a light colour scheme to ensure the pops of dark walnut, the black fireplace face, and industrial lighting really caught the eye. Now, it is possible to seat people at the beautiful 6-person island as well as at the harvest table. To highlight the rustic elements, we went with a complimentary bench that doesn’t impede the eyeline into the rest of the room.

Simplicity over maximalism allows for all the different textures and tones to steal focus. When it came to the fireplace, taking modest white tiles and wrapping them seamlessly around the corners increased the sophistication factor and brought a layer of intricacy to the design. The face was painted in the rich and a custom bench connects the fireplace to the living room (and does double duty as a seating solution and extra storage).

The rest of the house flows with similar style and achieves a perfect balance between modernity and comfort. This thorough renovation transformed an awkward 30-year old house into a family home that perfectly accommodates this couple from Ontario and their children.

“Jamie’s team did a wonderful job with our remodel. They turned a nasty fixer upper into a home that reflected our taste. All of our friends have been wow'ed by the end result. He's very responsive and takes a lot of pride in his work. We are so delighted by the result that we are using his team again for another project”.
