Let’s get bold and beautiful! We were invited to give a major facelift to a three bedroom rancher in Langley, British Columbia. Designed for an empty-nester, we wanted to create home that would welcome her sons to visit with her future grand-kids for family birthday parties and other new memories.

We started the design process by getting to know the home owner, how she lives, her habits, and the overall feel she wants to have when she opens her front door everyday.

When we met with the clients, we discovered that a traditional lived-in space was a must. They sought a relaxed yet stunning kitchen with a lot of storage and a space to gather.

Let’s walk you through some of the design details that transformed this builder special into a bold and beautiful home.

THE FIFTH WALL

Let’s start with one of the areas most neglected in a home: the ceiling! At first glance the ceiling detail might look existing, we wanted to create a rustic architectural detail, and add some charm to the space. At first glance, the wood beams look like solid wood but we actually crafted them from stained oak veneer and added the fun details like the aged brackets manufactured by a local craftsman, Birdman The Welder (Instagram: @birdmanthewelder). The industrial feel was carried throughout the whole home with metal details in the open shelving brackets and custom metal hood fan. We layered traditional elements into the space with the Metrie (Instagram: @officialmetrie) ceiling tongue and groove material painted white to match all the interior trim. Playing with texture is an easy way to add charm to any space so don’t be scared to add a few elements. In this kitchen, we combined wood beam details, a grooved ceiling, metal fittings, and a mosaic backsplash.

BOLD COLOUR

In a large space, do not be scared to add something bold! Here we used Benjamin Moore (Instagram: @benjaminmoore) 2062-10 polo-blue to add life to this home chef’s dream kitchen. All the millwork and kitchen cabinetry is shaped with a traditional shaker-style door, which balances out this bold blue.

BACKSPLASH

As with most features in this kitchen, we wanted to select a tile that was traditional yet contained a modern shape or size. Working with suppliers such as Ann Sacks (Instagram: @annsacks) we were able to select the Cashmere grey Capriccio Field tile. Taking the tile from countertop to ceiling makes the space feel larger and more curated.

COUNTERTOP SURFACE

Caesarstone quartz (Instagram: @caesarstoneca) was a must for our client who needed a countertop that’s stain, heat, scratch, chemical and mildew resistant. A perfect match to the blue was the stunning 5143 White Attica which was inspired by classic natural marble complete with beautiful dark grey veining. Don't be scared when you look at a slabs like this. Although the small sample piece may look bold in your hand, it looks amazing once installed and makes for the perfect statement pieces on the island.

FAUCET + SINK

The stunning Artifacts faucet is paired with a deep white cast iron apron sink, both supplied by Kohler (Instagram: @kohler). This pairing boosts the farmhouse charm of the space. For a warm and luxurious finish, we opted for polished nickel instead of the typical chrome. Adding a polished nickel finish to the faucet creates more layering to the space and generates a curated and detailed space.

METALS

The original selection for hardware and handles included a brass finish. While the client was reluctant at first, we understood her reservation and found an alternative. A matte black finished worked perfectly with all the other metals in the space. Don't be scared to mix metals, but do be aware of maintaining balance. A more subtle approach to mixing metals will make any space look more personal. And keep in mind when mixing metals to always layer them with the same undertone.
