Setting out to visualize the design and find the best way to present the concept to the client. Once the design is properly prepared, I present our best version of the floorplans, elevations, 3D-renderings, and models so they can better understand how we’ll transform their space.

To succeed, I keep an eye on the end goal while attending to every little detail that comes up. It’s crucial to have a long-term game plan and be adaptable and proactive to upcoming challenges and changes. It helps that I am very detail-oriented and can put myself in the space before it's built. In my head, I can see the 2D and 3D incarnations of the plan and all the tiny details that will go into it. This helps the overall success of the project but what improves it the most is staying open and flexible to changes. Having that initial understanding of the space does allow me to see all the available options so I’m not afraid to change or even fail because I can learn from my mistakes.

With the recent certification of Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD) I am very excited to see how I can assist in demonstrating the knowledge in the design and construction of buildings that meet the Passive House standard, which is a rigorous energy efficiency standard for buildings that reduces energy consumption and carbon emission.

Everything is always in action at JBD and we have to stay on our toes so we can adapt to new developments. Such a dynamic environment means we are constantly open to new ideas. No day is the same.

Summer jobs in construction gave me a bit of background information about the building process. Instead of choosing Architecture, I went into Environmental Design at OCAD University in Toronto because of how multi-disciplinary it is. I learned urban planning, interior design, landscaping and worked hands-on in studio classes. Taking what I learned and making it real at JBD as a Residential Designer is a great mix of art and physics. All the different environments of my education gave me the perspective I need to see how everything works together.

Bucket List:

Recently, I have been expanding my education with Passive House in order to become a Certified Consultant. To one day design a high quality, high performance, high efficiency home is the goal for now. Seeing something that I designed and envisioned become a reality, and the thought of someone out there enjoying something that I made is one of the best things I can do as a designer.
